We are proud to announce that our Pinot Grigio Santa Margherita has been once again certified Carbonzero. The largest certified programme of carbon neutrality ever realised by an Italian winery. Every bottle of Pinot Grigio distributed in Canada – almost 1.5 million a year – is certified carbon-neutral by a highly reputable non-Italian body, Carbonzero.
Carbon dioxide emissions have been eliminated by direct intervention on the production cycle and through compensatory real emission reductions in the form of carbon offsets. The carbon offsets acquired by Santa Margherita to compensate for non-eliminable carbon dioxide emissions, which means essentially transport and distribution, focus on the quality of life and the reduction of emissions in Canada through three strategic interventions:
1. Montreal Afforestation Project: This project was created in 2011 to plant on abandoned land and sequesters a part of Montreal’s atmospheric carbon. With a total project area of 109.6 hectares and more than 375,000 trees planted, this project is the largest of its kind in the region and the whole province of Québec.
2. City of Toronto Municipal Organics Biodigestion Project: This project diverts municipal organic waste from traditional landfill, thereby avoiding methane emissions to the atmosphere in favor of anaerobic decomposition with methane collection and destruction.
3.Bison Transport Fuel Efficiency Project: Intervention in Bison Transport’s broader fuel consumption reduction strategy to lower emissions deriving from product transport.
From the very beginning Santa Margherita Wine Group shared a connection to the land and the people who live and work on it, and this deep-rooted respect has been one of the main reasons for our success. Environmental, economic, and social factors have always been among the main considerations of the Santa Margherita Wine Group: we have established land management policies, implemented from Alto Adige down to Sicily; we’ve made major investments in energy-saving and renewable photovoltaic systems that have revolutionized our largest winery; and we have recently completed a biomass plant.
This is true sustainability, not a superficial whim. Our approach has made a real difference to daily life throughout the estates, and will continue to do so. We will never stop loving the land, because that love has always been and always will be reciprocated.
