Presentation of our Sponsorship of the Mille Miglia

Less than sixty days from the start of the 34th edition of the re-evocation of the original Mille Miglia race, Santa Margherita has presented the cars and crews of its team. This team will participate for the second year running, thus combining once again the elements of a glorious past that witnessed the impressive deeds - and victories – of the Marzotto family.

The press conference took place in the splendid setting of the Giacomo Arengario restaurant in the Museum of the Twentieth Century in Milan. The Santa Margherita team will take part with no less than five cars, in the capable hands of the new generations of the Marzotto family – Stefano, Alessandro and Sebastiano – as well as of the CEO of Santa Margherita, Ettore Nicoletto, and of professional racing driver Ivan Capelli (a former Formula Uno star and now a successful businessman, Grand Prix commentator for the RAI and President of the Milan branch of the Italian Automobile Club).

The Mille Miglia will start in Brescia on 19th May and will return there on the 22nd, after driving through one thousand six hundred kilometers of beautiful, unspoilt Italian countryside.

For Santa Margherita it will be an opportunity to consolidate its links with the history of the “most beautiful competition in the world” (as Enzo Ferrari described it), as well as with that of the Marzotto family, which was a protagonist of the editions that took place shortly after the Second World War.

The youngest ever winner was a Marzotto – Giannino in 1950; a Marzotto was the only two-time winner (again Giannino), in 1953; the first woman to take part in the competition, Gioia Tortimo, Giannino’s sister-in-law, was a member of the Marzotto team; and the “conti correnti” (“the racing Counts”) were also Marzottos. These were the four brothers who, in the 1950s, chose motor racing as one of the formative elements for their business activities: Giannino, Umberto, Vittorio (first in his class in 1954, finishing just behind Alberto Ascari) and Paolo.

«The Mille Miglia belongs to the history of our country,» Gaetano and Stefano Marzotto told the journalists present, «just as Santa Margherita is an important part of the history of Italian wine».
